Citrix Synergy Barcelona recap: Combining XenApp and XenDesktop

Date: Oct 22, 2012

Citrix Synergy Barcelona wrapped up last week, with lots of mobile and desktop virtualization news coming out of the annual conference. Experts Gabe Knuth and Jack Madden recap the keynote and explain the new technology announced at the show.

Desktop virtualization admins will be happy that Citrix is effectively packaging XenApp and XenDesktop into Excalibur, the first phase of Project Avalon. That will provide a unified management interface and back end for the terminal server and VDI products.

Giving a boost to mobile application management, the vendor added two mobile apps to its MDX suite. In the keynote, users also learned about ShareFile's StorageZone Connector, which will allow mobile workers to access legacy network shares.

More on Citrix virtual desktops

  • Why VMware and Citrix will support Linux VDI

Opinion - There's only a handful of customers who need Linux VDI, but that doesn't change the fact that they need it. In shops that use both Linux and Windows, a unified virtualization tool from VMware and Citrix could hit the spot.
  • Citrix VDI-in-a-Box

Definition - Citrix VDI-in-a-Box is all-in-one desktop virtualization software built for small and medium-sized businesses.
  • The difference between Citrix Workspace Suite and Workspace Services

Tip - Citrix's Workspace Services and the Workspace Suite aren't one in the same. The Suite is a bundle of products and Workspace Services is a delivery platform and control plane.
  • Anonymous logon returns in XenApp/XenDesktop 7.6

News - After alienating some customers by removing several XenApp and XenDesktop features last year, Citrix will start to bring some back in version 7.6. The improvements were in the works before VMware stepped up its competition, the company said.

  • Improving VDI for mobile workers with Citrix FlexCast

Answer - Mobile workers, employees who only need a few LOB applications and users whose jobs require graphics-intensive apps all have different needs, but you can supply a good experience for all of them with the Citrix FlexCast Management Architecture.
