This tool, which is available as a part of the Horizon Enterprise Edition or as a stand-alone option, is designed to monitor both VMware- and Citrix-based VDI deployments.
VMware vRealize Operations for Horizon is a single pane of glass interface that displays performance metrics and usage data for VMware Horizon, Citrix XenDesktop and Citrix XenApp. The console's interface is customizable, so administrators can display the information they find to be most helpful.
How does it solve a problem?
VMware designed vRealize Operations for Horizon primarily as a tool for resolving -- or, ideally, preventing -- performance problems with virtual desktops and virtual applications.
One of the things that made performance troubleshooting for VDI challenging in the past is that when a virtual desktop experienced performance problems, something outside of the virtual desktop itself often caused them. As such, VMware designed vRealize Operations for Horizon to have deep knowledge of the full infrastructure stack, down to the hypervisor.
What can IT learn from it?
If a user contacts the help desk to report a virtual machine performance problem, the responding technician can use the VMware vRealize Operations for Horizon console to perform a user search. Upon doing so, the software can compile a dependency tree that contains all the infrastructure components supporting that specific desktop. The technician can then examine the metrics for those components, as well as any other metrics of interest, in an effort to quickly determine the root cause of the problem.
VMware vRealize Operations for Horizon also provides administrators with high-level insight into virtual desktop health. Some of the information it provides within its dashboard includes which virtual desktops are experiencing the highest latency, which are consuming the most bandwidth, which have the highest packet loss and which have the longest session login times.
