Citrix Director is a management console in the XenDesktop and XenApp virtualization platforms that allows administrators to control and monitor virtual desktops and applications. With the Citrix Director console, information technology (IT) administrators can view XenDesktop and XenApp session details, disconnect or restart sessions, view customizable trend reports, shadow or control users sessions and set alerts associated with company policies. Director allows IT administrators to set up the console for unified deployment monitoring or configure a custom interface that provides help desk staff with resources to troubleshoot user-specific issues.

Director user monitoring includes reports on login duration, concurrent sessions and resource usage of specific applications and desktops. XenDesktop and XenApp Platinum customers can also review network connectivity details. Additionally, Director provides information on virtual machine malfunctions and sends alerts when a session or machine is not in compliance with IT policies. Help desk staff can also use Director to monitor or take over a specific user session using Windows Remote Assistance technology, following a request for access to the user.
Director is based on several component technologies. Citrix Delivery Controller, Virtual Delivery Agent and Monitor Service collect all the deployment information available in Director, and HDX Insight provides network monitoring for Platinum customers. Director uses Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) technology to receive monitoring details collected by Delivery Controller, Virtual Delivery Agent and Monitor Service in XenDesktop and XenApp 7 deployments and later. In earlier versions, Director uses Windows Remote Management technology instead of WMI.
Citrix Director was previously named Desktop Director in versions prior to XenDesktop and XenApp 7.
